This course is one part of the DL program “Examination of applications for plant breeders’ rights”. The program can be taken as one single course (DL-305) or as two separate courses (DL-305A and DL-305B). The overall study time to complete the DL-305 program will be similar (approximately 70 hours), whether it is completed as a single course or as DL-305A (approximately 30 hours) and DL-305B (approximately 45 hours). Participants can choose to study either or both of the DL-305A and DL-305B courses, in any order, and will receive a certificate at the end of each of the courses that they complete.
The objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the administration of plant breeders’ rights and the examination of novelty and denomination under the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.
The course comprises 8 modules, with an estimated study time of approximately 30 hours:
Section I “Operating a Plant Breeders’ Rights Office”
Module 1: The Plant Breeders’ Rights Office
Module 2: Administration of applications
Module 3: Entitlement to a breeder’s right
Module 4: Information to be published
Section II “Examining Novelty”
Module 5: Examining Novelty
Section III “Examining the Variety Denomination”
Module 6: Examining the variety denomination
Section IV “DUS Examination”
Module 7: Introduction to the DUS examination
Module 8: Cooperation in DUS testing
The course is followed on-line, via the internet. Each student studies at their own pace, on their PC or, alternatively, may download the course to study on paper. The course is estimated to require around 30 hours of study, which can be undertaken at any time within the 4-week study period. The course contains comprehensive explanations, diagrams, self-assessment questions and end of module tests to guide participants. Tutoring by UPOV experts provides students with the opportunity for further clarification and discussion. The final exam is taken on-line in the fifth week of the course. Electronic certificates are issued at the end of the course.

Entry level requirement: successful completion of UPOV DL-205 Course “Introduction to the UPOV System of Plant Variety Protection Under the UPOV Convention”, which means obtaining 70% or more in the final exam.
