Introduction

This Advanced Certificate Training Program is offered by WIPO and the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (SAKPATENTI).

Course objectives

This advanced training program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of officials managing national products whose quality is linked to origin. The program focuses on building capacity to use Geographical Indications (GIs) as a tool for sustainable growth and development. Participants will learn about the latest developments and best practices in GIs, with a strong emphasis on practical applications.

By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to design effective policies related to GIs. They will also be able to implement new techniques and strategies to promote national products, ensuring their quality and origin are highlighted and protected.

Curriculum highlights

The curriculum comprises the following phases:

Special session of the Advanced Course on Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (4 weeks, online, from August 3 to 28, 2026)

Selected participants must complete the Advanced Course on Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (DL-302) prior to their participation in the in-person Training. Only participants who have completed DL-302 within three years prior to their selection will be exempted from re-taking the course again. The special session of the DL-302 will take place for a period of four weeks from the notification of selection. An assessment and exam will take place at the end of this special session.

One week in-person intensive training in Tbilisi, Georgia, from September 21 to 25, 2026

The program will cover several key themes, including both theoretical and practical aspects, through in-depth lectures, expert-led discussions, and engaging case studies. Participants will also benefit from a most relevant on-site study visit, providing real-world insights into GIs. The key themes to be addressed include:

• Understanding geographical indications (GIs) Legal protection of GIs: National and international frameworks and case studies The Lisbon System: Appellations of origin (AOs) and geographical indications (GIs)
• GI Specifications, control mechanisms, Enforcement, and infringement for GIs
• Collective Management, Branding, and Commercialization of Registered GIs 
• Socio-cultural, environmental, and economic impacts of GIs
• Case studies: Successful examples of GIs
• Trademarks vs GIs: Challenges and solutions
• Advancing GIs: Innovations and emerging trends 
• Participants will be requested to submit and present their country reports.

Introduction

This training course is offered by WIPO in cooperation with the British Copyright Council and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) of United Kingdom.

Who should enroll

Senior officials from national copyright authorities and public funded entities in the field of copyright in developing countries, least developed countries and countries with economies in transition.

Course objectives

The course is designed to build the knowledge of participants on contemporary and emerging copyright issues from a technology and policy perspective.  

At the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of current developments in the field of copyright and related rights and the strategies to develop appropriate responses for the practical operation of copyright in the digital environment for the creative industries.

Curriculum highlights

The curriculum comprises the following phases:

Special session of the Advanced Course on Copyright and Related Rights (4 weeks, online, from September 7 to October 2, 2026)

Selected participants must complete the Advanced Course on Copyright and Related Rights (DL-201) prior to their participation in the course in person. Only participants who have completed DL-201 within three years prior to their selection will be exempted from re-taking the DL-201 again. The special session of the DL-201 will take place for a period of four weeks from the notification of selection. An assessment and exam will take place at the end of this special session.

• Copyright law and policy in the digital environment.
• Disruptive technologies and their impact in the copyright and related rights ecosystem.
• Limitations and exceptions: Balance between copyright protection and fostering creativity.
• Practical strategies for creators to protect their works.
• Regional efforts, strategies and compliance of copyright and related rights.
• Global digital trends and tackling solutions.
• Copyright and related rights management.
• Role of copyright offices in the creative economy: New visions and opportunities.

Participants will be requested to submit and present a country report in a relevant topic.

This executive program is offered by WIPO and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) for senior-level officials working in Intellectual Property (IP) Offices.

Who should enroll
Heads of IP Offices and senior officials working on intellectual property (IP) policy and administration issues from relevant government ministries or departments and IP offices.

Course objectives
The executive program is offered to enhance the managerial skills of senior IP officials responsible for the management of IP Offices for better delivery of IP services.

At the end of the program, officials will develop a deeper understanding of current and future challenges associated with managing IP offices and will be in a position to implement new techniques enabling the smooth running of an IP office, such as how to reduce backlogs, how to deliver qualitative services to stakeholders and how to introduce new services.

Executive Training (one week, in person Gatineau, Québec, Canada) – October 5 to 9, 2026

The main part of the program will encompass professional training and project related discussions. The program will cover, inter alia, the following themes:

• Supporting the Canadian IP Ecosystem
• Modernization of IPOs
• Modernization of information technologies (IT) at CIPO
• Economic research and data analytics at CIPO, patent analytics, data visualization, reports
• Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at CIPO
• Finance, budget origin and forecasting
• Strategic Planning and Performance Measurements
• Operational management
• Quality management
• Examiner training program

Identification, research and guidance on projects (up to 20 weeks)

Participants will be requested to identify projects for research on IP office management. Such projects must be endorsed by the participants’ respective institutions. Each participant will be prepared to conduct research on a selected theme of the project under the guidance of an assigned advisor from CIPO. The timeframe for submitting the project report and its implementation plan by each participant will last up to 20 weeks after the workshop.

The WIPO-CNIPA Executive Program is a high-level executive training designed for senior government officials, policymakers, institutional leaders and private-sector executives seeking to leverage IP, innovation and technology commercialization to accelerate the development and deployment of green technologies. A distinctive feature of this program is its public-private learning model, bringing together decision-makers from government, innovation agencies, research institutions and industry to exchange experiences, build partnerships and explore practical pathways for green technology commercialization.

Participants will explore how IP systems, technology transfer mechanisms and licensing strategies can accelerate green innovation and facilitate the commercialization, dissemination and cross-border transfer of green technologies. Particular emphasis will be placed on practical approaches to technology valuation, financing, partnership development, market deployment and scaling of green innovations. Through practical case studies, peer learning and public-private exchange, participants will strengthen their ability to assess commercialization opportunities, identify financing pathways, structure strategic partnerships and develop actionable approaches for accelerating the market uptake of green technologies.

Drawing on global expertise, international best practices, real-world case studies and collaborative learning methodologies, the program will enable participants to translate insights into action and drive measurable institutional, sectoral and national impact. By strengthening strategic leadership and implementation capacity across both the public and private sectors, the program aims to accelerate the development, commercialization, adoption and scaling of green technologies in support of innovation-led and sustainable development objectives.

The program aims to:

• Strengthen executive-level understanding of the role of IP in driving green innovation and sustainable development.
• Enhance participants' ability to commercialize, finance, transfer and scale green technologies.
• Build capacity to design enabling policies, institutional frameworks and public-private partnerships that foster innovation.

• Prepare and present a Green Technology Commercialization and IP Action Plan that addresses a concrete institutional, sectoral, national, or business challenge and includes implementation priorities, stakeholder engagement mechanisms, and measurable outcomes.

The learning outcomes are assessed through active participation, practical exercises, case discussions, and the development and presentation of the Green Technology Commercialization and IP Action Plan.

Sponsored Participants

Selected government officials and public-sector applicants may be considered for sponsorship, subject to program funding availability and compliance with applicable selection criteria. Information will be provided to selected participants after the selection process.

Self-Financed Participants

Qualified applicants from the private sector may participate on a self-financed basis and will be responsible for the applicable registration fee, as well as any associated travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses.
