The e-tutorial is an interactive learning tool covering the foundations of patent documentation, patent search strategies, and patent analysis and its numerous uses.  It includes tutorials, scenarios, and exercises to allow learners to expand and test their knowledge.
 
The e-tutorial is designed for a range of learners, from beginner to advanced and is offered through self-directed study and includes tests that allow each participant to gauge their knowledge and understanding at various points in the tutorial.

The e-tutorial can be useful for individuals, or to support group training for users with competency levels ranging from basic to intermediate, including students and researchers, small and medium business entrepreneurs, and policy makers.  It will also complement onsite training given within the framework of the WIPO Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) program.

It covers the workings of collective management of copyright in the categories of music, text and images, works of visual art and photography and dramatic works.  After a basic introduction of copyright and related rights which participants should know in advance of the course (see DL-201 Copyright), it lays the ground for the three main elements of a well-functioning copyright system: legislation, policy and management of rights.  The overriding principle is that whenever it is impracticable or impossible for IP rights holders to exercise their rights individually, collective management is a feasible solution.  The course examines the synergies that exist among stakeholders in the legal, creativity, management, and policy arenas in order to balance the benefits to creators and society.  It will also discuss the day-to-day work of CMO’s and how they are governed. Policy makers have a direct role in legislation and enforcement.  The primary role of policy makers is to lay down legislative framework for copyright and collective management.  In some countries, they can also have a supervisory role in relation to collective management.  This course is an introduction to policy making relying on the three main elements of a well-functioning copyright system, i.e., legislation, enforcement and management of rights.  Management of rights is mostly the task of the private sector, but in cases where legislation includes special stipulations on collective management, policy makers have a direct role, too. The main objective of this course is to examine different legislative frameworks for collective management and study what role Government can play in collective management of rights.  It also raises awareness of how creators, users, legislators and society at large benefit from the system of collective management in music and sound recordings, film and audiovisual, print and publishing, visual arts and photography, and dramatic works.

The target audience for this course primarily includes technical professionals such as patent examiners, health policymakers and their assistances, drug procurement specialists, IP specialists and senior students.

Recommended Prior Knowledge: It is recommended that participants have basic knowledge of Intellectual Property and how it relates to health and trade issues, at policy level.

Duration: This course requires approximately 10 hours of study time.

Intellectual Property (IP) is a key tool that facilitates both the protection and commercialization of goods and services at national, regional and international level. The Distance Learning (DL) course, DL-730 on IP and Exports adopts a practical, skills-focused methodology to address the common challenges and issues that are faced by exporters and export agency workers in everyday practice.
 
In seeking to raise awareness of the importance of IP to the exporting process as a whole, DL-730 examines the IP and export-related issues that arise in the specific national regulatory environments for business, trade and foreign direct investment within the Latin American and Caribbean region. The course draws on real-world, situational, case examples from Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, to attune learners to the practical cross-border and transnational considerations which they must give regard to when seeking to protect their IP-reliant products and services.
 
Throughout the course, participants will work toward building a practical checklist of activities that is customized to their own individual export environment.

Curriculum
 
This skills-focused course is comprised of 6 modules and a final assessment:

• Module 1: Introduction and problem-setting: IP & trade – real-world case examples and issues;
• Module 2: Obtaining rights abroad;
• Module 3: Licensing and sale of licensed products and services;
• Module 4: Foreign direct investment (FDI) as an alternative way to export knowledge, goods and services;
• Module 5: Review of national case studies and their best respective solutions;
• Module 6: Practical checklist for exporters and export agency workers.

Academic support is provided throughout each module by experienced tutors who are expert practitioners in the field of intellectual property.
 

This program provides comprehensive training on the drafting of patent applications to persons with professional and commercial interest in patents, and those who are looking to enhance their patent drafting skills across different technical fields. Designed as practice-oriented training, inventors and those providing services to them can acquire technical skills and knowledge necessary to prepare and file successful patent applications, including the capacity to draft all-important claims that determine the scope and coverage of the protection to be granted by a patent.
 
The training program will utilize state of the art WIPO e-Learning tools, while also giving unparalleled access to patent drafting experts virtually, through the use of online discussion forums, mentoring and in-person, through workshops conducted at WIPO Headquarters, in Geneva (Switzerland).

The training program is composed of three (3) phases:
 
Phase 1: Drafting Basics

• Fundamentals of drafting claims and the specification through facilitated discussions and exercises

Phase 2: Geneva Workshop

• Focused on improving technology-relevant patent drafting skills and practices of different jurisdictions
• Due to the prevailing public health and international travel situation, it may be necessary to conduct the in-person seminar either entirely, or partially online.

Phase 3: Mentoring

• Advanced patent drafting exercises in the participants’ field of expertis

Evaluations and Certificate
There is an Evaluation to test the patent drafting skills of participants at the end of Phase 3 via the WIPO’s online Learning Management System. Participants who successfully complete Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the training program, and pass the Evaluations scheduled at the end of the training program  will be awarded a WIPO Certificate.

Eligibility
Applicants must have:

1. Minimum 2 years of university level education; in law, and/ or in science and technology such as, engineering, life sciences, medicine, physics, chemistry, communication sciences or biotechnology; or at least 1 year of professional/ work or research experience in a field relevant to patent drafting/ patent prosecution.
2. General knowledge of IP and patents, at least equivalent to the WIPO Academy Distance Learning course DL301 - Advanced Course on Patents;
3. Proficiency in written and spoken English, i.e. minimum 2 years of university level education or higher in English, or TOEFL iBT 80/120 or IELTS 6.5/9 scores in the last three (3) years.
