Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the concept of intellectual property - Learners will be able to define intellectual property (IP) and identify various forms of IP
  • Recognize the legal frameworks and international treaties - Learners will understand the territorial nature of IP rights, and legal frameworks at national and international
  • Explain the types of IP Rights - Learners will recognize different categories of IP rights, and the conditions under which these rights are granted and protected
  • Understand international protections for IP rights - Learners will understand how international treaties such as the TRIPS Agreement set minimum standards for the protection and enforcement of IP rights among member states, as well as the role of bilateral and plurilateral agreements.
  • Link WIPO-administered conventions and treaties to their application in national settings

Introduction to Intellectual Property MODULE 1

Outline

  • What is intellectual property?
  • International Architecture of IP
  • Social Dimensions of IP
  • IP and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Learning outcomes

Learners will be able to define IP and be aware of various international treaties and agreements on the protection and enforcement of IP rights.

Condition for Completion:

  • Mandatory for all to achieve Credential 1 before proceeding to Credentials 2, 3 and 4.
  • Complete Module 1 and accompanying materials + pass multiple choice assessment with 50% grade

Copyright and Related Rights MODULE 2 and 3

Outline

  • What is copyright, and why protect it?
  • What protection do copyrights provide?
  • What are related rights?
  • Rights of beneficiaries of related rights.
  • Exception for educational and library use of copyright works

Learning outcomes

Learners will acquire an understanding of copyright and related rights, including its concept, coverage, duration, limitations, the types of works protected, rights granted, and exceptions for certain uses.

Condition for Completion:

  • Complete Modules 2 and 3 along with recommended reading materials + pass multiple choice assessment with 50% grade

Industrial Property MODULE 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

Outline

  • Fundamentals of trademark, registration and domain names
  • Protection of geographical indications
  • Protection of industrial designs, and related treaty discussions
  • Protection of industrial designs
  • Fundamentals and scope of patent rights
  • Protection of plant varieties and breeders' rights

Learning outcomes

Learners will acquire an understanding of the various types of industrial property rights, including its concept, coverage, duration, limitations, subject-matter of protection, and rights granted.

Condition for Completion:

  • Complete Modules 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 along with recommended reading materials + pass multiple choice assessment with 50% grade

Emerging Issues in IP MODULE 9, 10 and 11

Outline

  • What is unfair competition, and how it relates to IP
  • Infringement of IP and enforcement measures
  • IP in relation to biotechnology, traditional knowledge, and genetic resources
  • IP and contemporary issues such as artificial intelligence, climate change and technology transfer

Learning outcomes

Learners will acquire an understanding of the various forms of IP enforcement, along with an understanding of contemporary global issues from the perspective of IP.
